Hi there, I was recently reminded by a person who doesnt have Lupus about Aspartame being toxic. And this person was told that Aspartame was in all fizzy drinks. But,I read an article saying that now scientists have linked Aspartame to MS and Lupus. The article informed me, that it was only diet drinks, like diet coke which have Aspartame as an ingredient, and the article said you would be better off having two normal cokes a week than having ten diet cokes. Its really illuminating. I used to drink diet coke, and now do also drink Coke, albeit very occasionally, because i used to be addicted to Coke Cola. All through my teens and early twenties i never really drank fizzy drinks, very rarely would i have one as a sort of treat back then. But then one year i had a friend whose only cold drink she would offer would be Coke, and after a while of having a coke now and then each week, it got me into feeling i would would like some normal Coke Cola. But it got abit out of hand, and i was drinking three or four cans a day. I was definately addicted. So i gradually weened myself off, which i can honestly say wasnt easy. I couldnt believe that i would get so addicted to Coka Cola. When i saw a dietician, they said because of the raise in blood sugars temporarily it was making me feel good, and of course after a short time i would feel lousy again, so then i would have another drink of coke, and feel better. But it was an artificial lift i was getting. And had to learn how to eat better and keep my metabolism going on healthy natural sugars. I felt really stupid that i actually was craving Coke Cola at one point. Thank God that is in the past for me now. Because Aspartame is usually on the list of ingredients on drinks now, i am very careful to check the ingredients of what ever it is i eat or drink. Has anyone else had a problem like i had, or still do?

Actually I'm a splenda addict. Well not really. I usually skip the sodas but I drink crystal light tea made with splenda and put splenda in my coffee and eat sugar free foods and popsicles with splenda in it. The way I see it is that today splenda is out, tomorrow it will be in. Just like everything else they find is bad for you and then decide is good for you, then goes bad again. I've been diabetic almost 2o years now and I keep excellent control of my blood glucose levels. I gave up pastries and cakes and sugary foods and minimize carbs but I'm not giving up my COFFEE or my popsicles. I saw that article flying around about aspartame too. I shared it with my father's wife, a librarian (who researches everything) and she informed me it was a scam, not true, just a glorified rumour. That it was perpetuated by an anti-aspartame group. Here's what a scientific website had to say about it: www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/index.php/aspartame-truth-vs-fiction/So far I haven't seen any evidence this is true. My grandmother had lupus and never went near aspartame. Other family members that have MS and ai conditions also don't eat aspartame. It can't be GREAT for you, but I don't think its going to kill me and I'm pretty sure it didn't give me lupus. HUGS, Love Julie ps. I say GO FOR IT...you can't deny yourself EVERYTHING! Moderation is key.

i agree....i think it is worse to be freaked out about the food to eat or avoid....my glucose levels are way out of control right now and i (know this is not true) but i feel too little to know what to eat...plus i have some crazy destructive thing going on...trying to work it out now instead of pushing it away. anorexia gave me a heartache, bulimia bullied me too, overeating is overhated and i am so so so hungry for normal.

Hi Julie, Thats really interesting about the Aspartame. Because they have tried banning it apparently. But with life, everything is bad for us whatever we eat or drink. I once saw this joke which said dont eat this, dont eat that, dont breathe the air, and for goodness sake dont drink the water. And it made me laugh. Because whatever we do nowadays, its not right. When i used to have carers come out in the morning, they would say, oh you shouldnt use talc, its carcinogenic. I said really. So when i was told by my doctor make sure you use some talc, i was really confused. I use talc. I thought ah well with my history if i am going to get anything, i will get it at the end of the day you cant spend too much time worrying about every little thing. A friend pointed out the aspartame thing. And i did wonder if there was anything in it. There are varying reports, some saying you can get aspartame poisoning and its related to Lupus and MS. But what isnt related to Lupus and MS, hehe. Lupus is so complex anyway, there is heaps that you could say is related to it. I wonder what Dave would make of it. As he has said they have tried banning the substance. There was an article on ebay about it the other day would you believe of all places. It does make you wonder how much of a risk is it really?? I do know what you mean about not wanting to give up certain things. Having Lupus we sacrifice so much with our health issues, we have to have something we enjoyxoxoxox
